PRESERVATIVES
Food preservatives are chemicals or substances added to food to prevent spoilage and extend shelf life. They work by inhibiting the growth of microorganisms, preventing oxidation and enzymatic reactions, and maintaining food quality. Common examples include sodium benzoate, Sorbic acid, propionic acid, Potassium Sorbate, Calcium Propionate, Potassium Metabisuphite and various esters and antioxidants.Types of Chemical Preservatives:
- Antimicrobials:These prevent the growth of harmful bacteria, yeasts, and molds. Examples include sodium benzoate, sorbic acid, and propionic acid.

- Other Preservatives:These include other chemicals like sulfites and nitrates, which are used in various food products.
- Extended Shelf Life:Preservatives help food stay fresh for longer periods, reducing waste and making it more convenient to consume.
- Reduced Risk of Foodborne Illness:By inhibiting the growth of harmful microorganisms, preservatives help prevent foodborne illnesses.
